Diana, founder of BlankWall, at home in Toronto

Our story

Diana G., founder · Toronto

The wall

I'm Diana. I live in Toronto with my husband and our two young kids.

I started decorating my house while they were very small. The furniture came together slowly, the way everything does with small kids at home. The walls stayed blank.

It wasn't that I didn't care. I cared a lot. I wanted something modern that would still look right in ten years, and I wanted it to be well made. What I had was an hour after bedtime, a tape measure and too many tabs open. I guessed at sizes.

I only sell art I'd hang in my own home.

That's the whole test. If I wouldn't put it in our living room or the kids' rooms, it isn't here. I have pieces from every studio we work with on my own walls. I'd rather show you a short range I believe in than a long one I don't.

What was missing

Three things, mostly. So I started a shop that answers them before you have to ask.

  • Sizing help

Every shop told me a piece's dimensions. Almost none told me whether it would suit my sofa, my ceiling or my wall.

    What BlankWall does

Your Blank Wall takes a photo of your wall and shows a piece on it at approximate scale. The Wall Guide covers how big and how high.

  • Who makes it, and where

I couldn't tell who had made a piece, where it was made or what it was printed on.

    What BlankWall does

Every product page tells you who made or designed the piece, where it's made, and what it's printed or painted on, before you add it to your cart.

  • How long it takes

"Ships soon" isn't a date. With two small kids, I needed to know when something would actually arrive.

    What BlankWall does

Every piece says how long it takes to reach you, in words, before you pay.

    Made to order, explained

Who makes the art?

Two Canadian studios. Both ship from Canada. Prices are in CAD, and there are no duties or brokerage at your door.

  • Burlington studio

Made to order · 3 to 4 weeks

Our Burlington studio, in Ontario, makes pieces to order: you choose the size, the finish and the frame, and the studio prints, stretches and frames it for you.

  • Montreal studio

Ready to ship · 2 weeks

Our Montreal studio designs studio editions that are ready to ship from its Montreal warehouse. When an edition sells out, it isn't reprinted.

What I promise

  1. A person chose every piece here. Most of the time, that person is me.

  2. You'll know who made it, where, and how long it takes before you pay.

  3. You can see the size on your own wall, at approximate scale, before you buy.

  4. One price in Canadian dollars, with the shipping line beside it. Nothing extra at your door.

  5. If a piece arrives damaged, I'll make it right. Send me a photo within 5 days of delivery; I'll reply within one business day and order the replacement.

Write to me

If you have a blank wall and aren't sure what goes on it, send me a photo and the width of the wall. I read every message myself, and I usually reply the same day.
