About this piece

Parkinson’s Engraving is a series of twelve botanical engravings, available in both Large and Small sizes. Each artwork focuses on flowers, leaves, and plant structures rendered through intricate linework. The monochromatic palette keeps the focus on texture, shape, and craftsmanship, while the generous white linen textured space surrounding each subject gives the images a clean and balanced appearance. Curving leaves, delicate flower heads, and layered botanical forms create movement throughout the compositions, while the careful use of line density adds depth and dimension. The close-cropped views encourage attention to detail, allowing the natural geometry of the plants to become the primary visual element. Parkinson’s Engraving is rooted in one of the most significant botanical recording projects of the 18th century. The plant specimens depicted in the series were collected by naturalists Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander during Captain James Cook’s first voyage to the Pacific between 1768 and 1771. Artist Sidney Parkinson accompanied the expedition and produced detailed black-and-white drawings of the species observed during the journey. These original illustrations were later translated into engraved copper plates by a team of skilled engravers, preserving the remarkable detail of Parkinson’s work. The series reflects the close relationship between art and science during the Age of Exploration.
